Z95 Headhunter

Description

The Incom/Subpro Z95 Headhunter. Forerunner to the later T65 X-Wing, the Z95 Headhunter first appeared just before the Battle of Naboo. An advanced machine in its day, the original machine boasted variable geometry wings ("swing wings") and a set of triple barreled blasters on each wing.

Future Alliance/New Republic General Han Solo once lead a squadron of Outlaw Tech mercenaries in battle against the Corporate Sector Authority using examples of these early Headhunters.

Over time, the Headhunter was upgraded and improved, with a set of precision maneuvering thrusters replacing the need for variable geometry wings, and a more powerful laser cannon on each wing replaced the triple barreled blasters.

A pair of concussion missile launchers were also installed on the fuselage of the ship, rounding out its armament. By default, Headhunters lacked a hyperdrive, though they did boast average shielding, giving them a good defense in combat.

Following the advent and production of the X-Wing, Headhunters started to see a drop off in use with Alliance front line fighter forces, although the Alliance did keep them around as combat trainers, as the controls and basic flight performance was similar enough to the X-Wing that cadets could train on the Headhunter, then transistion to X-Wings with ease.

Pirates, mercenaries, and other "fringe" groups continued to use the Headhunter in fair numbers, even well after the death of Palpatine at the Battle of Endor and the later capture of Coruscant by the New Republic.
