Description

The Galactic Enforcer, set number 5974-1, from the series Space Police III. (More pics below if you don't wanna read)

This monster is built in true classic Lego fashion, following the other big spaceships of years gone by such as the Deep Freeze Defender, Mission Commander and Explorien Starship.

Boasting 825 pieces, she took me over 4 hours to assemble and she's packed with special features. There are TWO cockpits, one in the very front under the large blue canopy, and a second one just behind it. The area behind the second cockpit houses a small rover, and boasts the fire control systems for the pair of quad gun turrets on the ship's wings.

Like her Space Police predecessors, she carries prisoner pods, four of them in total. They're the blue cylinders on the side of the ship on either side of the second cockpit.
The two engine pods can detatch from the ship to become small scout craft while a folding ramp at the stern allows the rover to deploy. The forward section of the ship detatches to form a small spacecraft of its own.

Ever since about 1998, Lego sets have just not been made like this, they're made with fewer and fewer pieces, and what few there are, they're big, and heavily specialized, thus not allowing you to build anything else with the parts. The Space series itself all but died out due to the rise of Star Wars, but a small revival took place in the mid-2000s.

2008 saw the third generation of Space Police appear, and their sets are basically like all new Lego sets, uninspired, lacking in creativity, and heavily dependent on big, super-specialized pieces.

2009 saw the sole exception, the Galactic Enforcer. Completely reversing the prevailing trend, she's a true "big starship" in the canon of Lego's flagships of the past. It seems that Lego built this ship on purpose to be a "last hurrah", the "swan song" of their big ships packed full of special features, before they change forever into making bland, featureless kits that are little more than Duplo sets with a different name.
